- The Mirror - A Narrative Writing
As soon as I saw my mom walk out of my line of vision, I heaved a long breath, I turned over to my side from where I was lying and clutched my stomach. The pain slowly consumed me. taking over every inch of me until I was no longer conscious. I woke up a few hours later and finally took in my surroundings. Earlier, I was too drunk on pain to notice it, but now, I see it. The shattered glass bottles on the floor, my own blood from where I fell unconscious, and another piece of my hope broken. I got up tentatively and started picking up the broken glass, but failed to put the broken pieces of myself together. I walk over to the mirror and stare at myself. I don’t recognize her anymore. I let my gaze travel over my reflection, lingering over the area where I could see a bruise forming. I pick up my foundation and start applying a heavy coat, then apply a layer of concealer over it. Once I was sure the bruise was concealed, I walked away from the mirror. But I don't get too far. I stopped and stared back at myself. Was I really going to let her win again? Was she ever going to take up her role as my mother? Will she ever stop abusing me? I pick up my makeup remover and start removing the things that have only encouraged my abuser for years now. I wasn't willing to give her the upper hand. Not anymore. I removed the makeup and looked back at my reflection. Really looked at me. I saw beneath the bruises and saw a young girl whose innocence was taken at a young age. I refuse to live in fear any longer. Do not hide your abuse, it will only encourage the abuser. - Estrella
- Do you feel alone?
Do you ever feel like nobody cares? It's like nothing you do matters? I do. I feel that way all the time. Let’s not kid ourselves though; not everyone actually does care. I mean, there are more than 7 billion people in the world, and not everyone can care about you. Hell, some people don't even know who Taylor Swift is! That isn’t really a problem compared to starvation, poverty, war, rape, and all the terrible things happening in our world. It’s still tough though, just dealing with that horrid empty feeling in your chest. Just because the problem is smaller doesn't make the pain we feel any less hurtful. Now for the obvious truth, we just have to accept that there's nothing you can do to get rid of it. The only thing you can do is learn how to deal with it. I bet you’re probably laughing or something, waiting for me to yell "April Fools" through the screen. I would too. As much as I want to, I can’t. The only thing I can do is continue to slam my fingers down on my keyboard, trying to find the best way to phrase these sentences. I’m not going to sprout useless things like, "It’s all going to be alright," or "Things will get better," or some other disgusting display of toxic positivity. I will tell you this, though. There will always be at least one person who cares. That person could be a family member, a friend, a teacher, a classmate, or even someone you’ve just met! All that matters is that they’re there, so block out that annoying little voice and tell yourself that you are cared about, that you are loved, and what you do matters. You matter just as much as the rest of the 7 billion people on this planet and have just as much right to be here.
- "My talent is insulting people" - Estrella : The Whatnot Interviews #1
Hello! It's April here, and I'm going to be interviewing all of the Whatnot writers! These are no formal interviews though, expect plenty of funny antics, interruptions from other members and bad jokes (none by me though, I am hilarious... can't say the same for others). So I'll be asking a set of the same, or similar questions to every member, and of course one of them will have to interview me eventually. I also probably won't be talking much except for the questions, because I'm too busy trying to write everything down! Now without further ado, let's start with Estrella. 1. What is your role in Whatnot? April: Okay, I'm just going to start. What is your role in Whatnot? Estrella: Uhh... can I type the answers down when I get home ? Note: (we were in school and I was writing down everything she was saying) April: But that's not how interviews work... Estrella: I know, but I have a fear of rats! April: There are no rats here... Estrella: I'm talking to one right now. 2. Who is your favorite writer of Whatnot, aside from yourself? April: Haha, very funny. Next question: Who's your favorite writer/ member of Whatnot. There's a right answer *subtly points to self*. Estrella: Certainly not you *smirks*. April: Are you okay? Your face is twitching, you look sick. Estrella: Only because I'm looking at you. Serket: *watches April write like a creep* Serket: Wait April stop. *draws April's hand* April: *sighs* 3. What's going on in your life right now? April: Can I continue now? Serket: *nods* April: Estrella, what's going on in your life right now? Estrella: What's the what? Serket: *holds up picture of April's hand* April: *thumbs up* April: Okay, let me try this again, what's going on in your life right now? Estrella: I’m currently trying to legalise human-food marriages. It’s a very difficult job. April: Haha. But seriously. Estrella: I am serious- Never mind. Hmm, okay well I like to read and listen to music with my time, ‘cause we’ve established I can’t be productive to save my life. April: Speaking of productivity, how are you doing in school? Estrella: Well I like to annoy people with pick-up lines and jokes, which are definitely funny. April: Funny jokes, you say? I’ll be the judge of that, tell me one of these ‘funny’ jokes. Estrella: Wait, let me think if a good joke. Summer: *laughs* You can’t. Estrella: How much did the chimney cost? Summer: I don’t know. Estrella: Nothing. It was on the house. Is this funny? Summer: *shakes head* I’ve gotta be honest. Anyway it’s so cold here. Estrella: Uh, no it’s not. Summer: Yes it is! Touch my hand, its freezing. Estrella: It’s not freezing, it’s ugly. April: And that’s coming from the girl with baby hands. Estrella: *gasps* That’s Spectre! April: *sighs* Back to the interview. 4. What makes you special or different from the other members? Estrella: My talent to… Serket: Make people cringe? Estrella: Insulting you and April at every possible situation? My talent is insulting people. April: You know for it to be a talent, you need to be good at it. Estrella: *can’t think of a good comeback and looks to Summer for help* Summer: *reads book and calls April funny* Estrella: What no, I’m supposed to be the funny one! April: You’ll always be the delusional one though. Serket: ESTRELLA WHAT’S THE TIME? Estrella: The same time it was the last six times you asked! April: Back. To. The. Interview. 5. What are you going to do next in Whatnot? Estrella: *doesn’t hear April and starts screeching some song* Serket: For the love of god, shut up. Summer: Oh no, what animal is dying? April: Estrella, answer the question! Estrella: What question? April: *asks question again* Estrella: Ooh, I was planning on starting an advice column sort of thing but for book reviews and sharing some playlists I’ve created, instead of studying, and publishing a narrative I wrote. Note: The book review column and narrative writings are published now! You can check them out in the links attached at the end of the article. April: Ahh I can’t wait for those! Finally we’re done. Estrella’s book reviews/suggestions: click this link https://thewhatnotmagazine.wixsite.com/website/bookreviews or click here Estrella’s narrative writing “This could not be the present”: click this link https://thewhatnotmagazine.wixsite.com/website/post/this-could-not-be-the-present or click here So that’s it for interview #1. - Let it all out
Do you feel like you want to smash your fists against everything around you? Or like you’re going to burst into flames at any moment? Anger. It’s one of the strongest and most frequent emotions we feel. You’re probably familiar with it. I mean, everyone has had at least one time where they just couldn’t handle it and burst. If you haven't, then seriously, you need to get over here right now and take over writing this article! Now, let’s get back. These explosions, should I say, are normally caused by stress and a lot of pent-up frustration, caused by your work or school, maybe your love life, or yourself and the people you surround yourself with. Whatever the reason, there is absolutely no reason for you to torment yourself by keeping all of those complicated feelings inside of you! I don’t know why you do it- I mean, everyone has different reasons behind their anger. Maybe you don’t want anybody to help you. If your answer is yes, then I get you. I get you so much. Why would you want someone to see your flaws and you at your worst? They could use that against you in the future or something along the lines, right? Whether it is or not, that reason doesn’t really make a difference. You shouldn’t suppress all of your anger inside you. You’ll think about it way too much, and planning revenge will become a second instinct, a very unhealthy one at that. It’s not good, and you’ll never find your mind in a state of peace. It physically hurts after a while. Like, a lot. Don’t do that yourself. Let it all out and learn to control it instead of letting it control you. I speak from experience. That anger will hurt the people you love and admire and will lead to nothing good if you confine it within yourself. Those people might get fed up and walk away; they have feelings, too, after all... maybe something that you have been working really hard towards. It’s not worth it, trust me. I’ve been waking up very early in the morning and going for a jog to try and convince my mum to let me go out with my friends. I just blew it. All that work, energy, and hope were wasted. You never wanted to feel this feeling
- How do you overcome Insomnia?
Do you feel tired during the day? Do you have a habit of tossing and turning on your pillow? How many hours do you sleep every day? It is recommended to sleep 13–7 hours a day, depending on your age group. It’s okay if you pull an all-nighter once in a while to have a little fun with your friends or to finish that English essay you left until the last minute. However, if you feel sleepy during work or school for more than a few nights, you may want to take a look. Insomnia is a sleeping problem that makes it difficult to fall asleep, difficult to stay asleep, or wake up too early and not be able to go back to sleep. There are two types: short-term and chronic insomnia. They both vary due to how long they last and the reasons behind them; short-term typically lasts from a few days to a few weeks, whereas chronic can last longer and take place more frequently. It may not seem very dangerous, but when left untreated for too long, it can lead to problems such as diabetes, hypertension, and weight gain. To all those caffeine addicts out there (my raccoon friends especially), put that coffee away for a bit, like seriously! Of course, it would be rude of me to blame sleeplessness entirely on coffee; there are other factors, such as stress, a poor sleep schedule, or eating dinner too late. Last month, I found it practically impossible to get a wink of sleep. I had some important exams and found myself studying late and waking up early. My sleep tracker calculated that I slept for an average of 4 hours during those few weeks and woke up frequently in between. I didn’t tell anybody because I didn’t want them to worry or fuss over me, especially so close to the exams. I felt exhausted in school and had trouble paying attention to lessons and focusing when studying. So how did I get rid of it without anybody's help? Alright, fine-I might be getting a little ahead of myself. I would NEVER have managed without the internet! I found some helpful tips from the articles I read (which was a ton, trust me!), I found some helpful tips. Of course, you may have different preferences, so these suggestions might not work as well as they did on me for you, but I recommend you give them a try anyhow! 1. Create a pleasant atmosphere. I take some time before going to sleep by just clearing my head and not worrying about the crazy things in my life. I sometimes light some scented candles (vanilla cream is my fave) and listen to some calming music-no, not some classical sonata, just anything that makes you feel happy and safe. 2. Make your bedroom feel like home. My room is my safe place and makes me feel secure, and I think that it reflects who I am from the way I decorated it. Whenever I look at my artwork, I remember the stories and emotions they possess—both the positive and the negative. Make the lights, temperature, and atmosphere conducive to falling (and staying) asleep. 3. Don’t eat or drink anything within an hour before you go to bed. Minus some warm milk and hot water, you want to stay away from all food and drink. This is because overindulging yourself before going to bed can affect your sleep patterns. I generally try to finish eating my dinner a little early, around 8.30ish or earlier, so that my food will digest a little before I go to bed, which is usually around 10 pm. It all depends on your bedtime, so plan according to your own schedule. 4. Steer clear of anything addictive. Caffeine and nicotine are probably the most common and addictive things you want to avoid before going to sleep. You may also have some unique addictions that you should keep away from. I used to stay up listening to music for hours and forget to switch it off, so when I woke up the music would still be playing from my headphones. This was not only extremely unhealthy, but it also drained my battery so much! 5. If you can’t sleep, get up! Don’t lie there just worrying. Get some fresh air and hydrate yourself, then do something relaxing until you feel like sleeping again. I used to sit on my sofa for ages, just looking out of the window and counting sheep. If you still feel restless and find it difficult to sleep, make an appointment with your doctor soon!
- This could not be the present: A Narrative Writing by Estrella
I discreetly closed the door and tip-toed towards Quinn’s bedroom. I nervously glanced at her door, scared of how she would react to the gift I bought her. But I swallowed my fear and knocked on her door. After a few minutes of stillness, I raised my arm to knock once again and was met with an uncomfortable silence. I felt panic rise within me. I quickly let go of the bag I was holding and sprinted towards the cabinet that held the keys. After a few furious minutes of combing through it, I found the keys and raced back towards the door. I fumbled with them until I finally got it in and pushed open the door. The sight in front of me was enough to make me drop dead - Quinn lay on the floor with white foam dribbling down her chin and in her hands lay a… prescribed drug, I felt my throat construct and eyes burn but I was already moving. I didn't have time to cry, not when my daughter was on the verge of death. I stumbled out of the room to get my phone and frantically called an ambulance. The ambulance came not long after and quickly strapped Quinn to a stretcher and transported her inside the vehicle. They let me sit next to her after taking in my distressed state. I quietly sat there and took her slender hand in mine and took a deep breath. Today was our day. We bought presents for each other every year on this day. This could not be the present this year. Quinn had her whole life planned out and this would change everything. We made it to the hospital after what felt like an eternity and Quinn was quickly taken to surgery. I nervously bounced my leg while waiting for the doctor to come back with the results, and finally, the door opened. I leaped up to my feet and clasped my hands in front of my abdomen. It was hard to decipher the emotion on the doctor's face, but they slightly flinched at my hopeful expression. That’s when I knew my daughter did not make it, and the next words they said proved my point, “I’m sorry. She didn't make it.” I felt my lips start to tremble as glistening tears obscured my vision. I tried to run toward the room but the doctor held me back. I tried to fight the sob that tried to escape me but it was useless. The doctor told me to come up to her after I felt better. Feel better? Does that mean this hollowness in my chest will ever go away? Will I forget about how my daughter's eyes light up every time she laughs or the sound of her voice? If I thought I was broken then, nothing compared to what I felt now. Turns out my sweet little Quinn had a brain tumor. Those drugs were to reduce the migraines and the reason she never told me was because she knew we would never be able to afford it. With my job as a waiter in the cafe downtown, It would take us years to afford to pay for the medications, but Quinn should have known I would do everything in my power to keep her alive. Only if she were alive for me to tell her. ESTRELLA
- The not-so-romantic origins of valentines day
Valentine’s day. The day that sweethearts of all ages cherish their love for one-another with revolting displays of affection, cringe confessions- and let’s not forget the massive bouquets, chocolates and cards. Well, even if it is now globally recognized as the day of love, its origins weren’t as romantic as one might hope. It is widely believed that valentine's day originated from the roman festival Lupercalia, which is celebrated in the coming of spring. It generally included fertility rituals and matchmaking in effort to ward off evil spirits and infertility. Fertility rites you ask? No, not the typical statues, rare herbs and prayers. Those Romans always had their own way of doing things. First, they would sacrifice a dog and a goat then proceed to skin the dead animals. Next, they would use the hides of the dead animals (see step 1) and whip the queue of, um, unclad women. After that, women would write their names on scraps of pottery and put them in a jar. The men would have to randomly pick a scrap and whoever’s name they got was to be their girlfriend for the next year (or longer if the match worked out). Now, you may be wondering why the day of love is called so. The Romans may also have to receive full credit for that one too! On the 14th of February in different years in the 3rd century AD, Emperor Claudius II put two men, both called Valentine, to death. Coincidence? I think not.
- How To Improve Your Graphic Editing
Trying to edit an image or poster may seem simple, as most graphic editing software are easy to use, but there are common mistakes that make your graphics look unprofessional and messy. Keep in mind that I'm no professional, or even remotely close to one, but these pointers will help to lift your editing and make it look more sophisticated, everything I've written are just things I realized make my editing look neater and better, and I hope it helps you too. Do not clutter. If there are many things you want to include in an edit, try not to layer them on top of each other, and some things may just be unnecessary. It's good to add details but do not go overboard with them, they can hog up the space and make the edit look cluttered. You could also spread them out over the space of the image, rather than layering them and making a part of the graphic look too crowded and another too empty. A simplistic edit looks far more sophisticated than a cluttered one. Example: Warning: Shameless Self-Promo- Although one of the graphics do not look so good, you should definitely do what it says ;) You can sign up for our newsletter by going to the 'Newsletter' tab or just use this link https://thewhatnotmagazine.wixsite.com/website/newsletter Note: All the "don't" parts of the examples are exaggerated to add emphasis to the point and display why something looks bad. Stick to a theme. To follow this, you can choose two fonts and two colors, personally, I think it's best to only use two of each, but if you want you could totally do more, although it would look better if you did not use completely different colors and fonts every time you colored or typed in something. A theme could consist of two standard colors and fonts that all go well with each other. For the fonts I suggest making one more elaborate and the other simple and easy to read, one of the fonts can be used for titles, subheadings etc. the other can be used for body text. The font combinations could be combinations of cursive/handwriting/calligraphy fonts plus print letter fonts. For colors, the colors can be different but they should match, but more on that later. This also means that if you're intentionally using only lower-caps stick to that, if not do not randomly start using only lower-caps. Note: I can just feel Divinus coming to attack me for how bad the first one looks. Choose the right colors. This also means you have to follow the last point, of choosing two colors. I would personally suggest not using the default colors that are given when you try to choose colors. Like these from Canva: These colors are overused and not that aesthetically pleasing, instead you can opt for other colors like a muted red, a pale blue or a pastel green; basically different aesthetic colors. When you choose two different colors make sure that they match! Do not go for colors completely different like a very light grey with a neon orange for example, but at the same time make sure the colors aren't that similar, like a neon orange with a neon pink will not look appealing. You could also organize color palette to stick to, if you need inspiration just search up color palettes on the internet and see what colors you like best. You may be a fan of all-pastels or retro 80's colors, it's really up to you. Be creative and original Try using different fonts and techniques to brighten up your works. Instead of going with the default fonts and colors (already show previously), make your graphic look different and interesting. We've all used the basic Calibri or Comic Sans (which I freaking hate) fonts, but there are many other ones out there, choose the one that you like. Use creativity and originality to make your edits unique! All images and materials used are from Canva, and all the examples have been made with Canva. Want to contact the writer about this post? - Doll Of The Brook.
the lighting my muse; the thunder gave birth to dawn i traced myself back here -- just to see the sky unravel in the morning. < sunrise? surprise? who knows. > the undergrowth shrivels and the seeds scatter although the leaves are no longer the ones i know i'm back here to dig up a graveyard of my memories. long gone, long past, long, long, long. many march’s ago i came across a brook shaded from the blazing sun beyond the fence, as rickety as it was, there lay a raggedy doll -- doll of the brook. now breathing? it questioned me, “must you be so inquisitive?” the questions were asked and the secrets swapped soon the green leaves gave way to the blood-red; the thunder like the claps of an unseen audience freezing draughts swept our skirts, but we were too busy sweeping each other off our feet to notice. we were too busy to see where we were dancing off to, arm in arm, hand in hand it was decided. we were star-crossed companions. and like all those who were star-crossed, we were not favored by the stars. although i never knew what stopped us from waltzing off to them. off to the stars, that is.
- New Year's Resolutions 2022
We always view the new year as a fresh start, and many people start their year off by setting a goal or resolution for themselves to improve their mental and physical wellbeing, or to make themselves a better person in general, for example a very popular resolution is to hold back on something unhealthy, such as cake. Other resolutions are a little more, let’s say, grown up, like doing community service, visiting a care home or donating food, clothes and money to those who need it. It’s hard to think of a resolution which is worthwhile, and that you will be able to keep for a whole year, so instead of spending hours sleeping on it, try one of these 10 New Year's resolutions for 2022! 1. Get some exercise We’ve blamed COVID-19 for our increase in laziness for about two years now, and it’s time to stop pointing fingers and actually do something! Try doing some yoga or go for a morning jog. 2. Donate things you don’t use to charity There are lot’s of charities such as Comic Relief, Children in Need and Lumos who work to make the tough lives of children all around the world better. You can donate money online, and some schools provide opportunities to give clothes, books and toys. 3. Don’t waste food It takes a lot of time, energy and money to produce a single crop. There are so many people out there without food, water and a roof over their heads. Lots of small children die of starvation and other diseases due to the lack of food, and it isn’t fair that we waste food when they don’t even have any. 4. Reduce Screen Time We spent an unhealthy time on our tech and it’s started to become addictive. Yes, I know it's awesome (I’m not a millennial), but there’s a whole new world out there that’s not going to wait for us to explore it. There are many problems cropping up, such as obesity, sleep problems, chronic neck and back problems, depression, anxiety and lower test scores. 5. Be happy with what you have It’s okay to treat yourself now and then with a spa day, or shopping spree but be grateful with what you have. Think about what you have and what you’ve been blessed with, starting with a roof over your head and food. Stop saying I want, I want, I want, ‘cos that’s crazy.
